News & Events

The Society

Formed in 1983, Felixstowe & District ARS provides a varied programme of talks, visits and events roughly fortnightly throughout the year. Annual special events include GB2WTM from Woodbridge Tide Mill for National Mills Weekend and GB2FX from the Landguard Fort site, which also houses the Felixstowe Museum, for Darrell Day; the commemoration of Captain Nathaniel Darrell, who repelled the Dutch invasion in July 1667.
The Society also co-hosts the annual East Suffolk Wireless Revival. - the Ipswich Rally.
Several members are very keen on contesting and are always looking for new operators.

The main thrust of the Society, however, has always been radio training. Since the amateur radio training programme began within the Felixstowe & District ARS in 1989, over 450 people have been successfully trained for the various Morse, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced licence exams. Over 250 people were successful in the former City & Guilds RAE and Novice RAE exams, and latterly over 250 people have successfully tackled the RSGB/RCF examinations.

We are affiliated to the RSGB (Radio Society of Great Britain).
Members also indulge in monthly breakfasts as part of the Codgers.

Where to find us

Our Club room is situated in the grounds of Orwell Park School [JO02oa] near the village of Nacton, south-east of Ipswich.
From Junction 58 of the A14, take the A1156 towards Ipswich. Take the second left turning, sign-posted: "Nacton village".
From here head for Nacton village, about a mile from the junction. At the far end of the village there is a triangle of grass with a village cross on the right-hand side of the road. Bear left. Approximately 100 metres further on bear right down a slope, sign-posted "Broke Hall Park, Orwell Park School". At the end of this road you will see the wrought iron gates of Orwell Park School. Turn left before entering these gates, towards the river. Ignore the next gate and turn right into the one after. Park here and you will be met there by your society host. You may need to wait for a guide to unlock the gate for you.
